From Vigo it is about 65 km on the A-55 and the A3: fifty-five minutes, no toll worth mentioning and nothing to do at the border. On the other side, Paredes de Coura is a green Minho valley with a clear river, granite villages and a silence that is hard to find this close to Galicia. It is the two-day escape that does not need holidays.
Real driving times in normal traffic: Vigo 55 min (65 km), Pontevedra 1 h 05, Santiago de Compostela 1 h 35, Tui / Valença 20 min, Ourense 1 h 40. The route is simple: A-55 to Tui, the international bridge, A3 to the Paredes de Coura exit and ten minutes of country road between vineyards.
One detail that surprises many first-time visitors: Portugal is one hour behind Spain. Leave Vigo at 6 pm and arrive at 6 pm local time. On the way back, count the other way.
Because here there is nobody around on weekdays, and very few people at weekends outside August. The Coura valley lives at its own pace: freshwater river beaches, trails between mills and viewpoints, granite villages and a small town with cafés, a bakery and a market.
And because the price follows: off season, a whole stone house with a kitchen costs what a hotel room on the coast does. No hidden extras, and parking inside the property.
Saturday. Arrive mid-morning, coffee in town, then up to the Corno do Bico protected landscape for a short walk among oaks. In the afternoon, a swim or a nap at the Taboão river beach, five minutes from the house. Dinner on the terrace, valley in front of you.
Sunday. Slow breakfast. A trip to Sistelo (35 min), the stone terraces they call the little Portuguese Tibet, or to Ponte de Lima (25 min), Portugal's oldest town, with its Roman bridge and fortnightly market. Back to Galicia in the late afternoon, with an hour to spare.
Casa Outeiro 99 is two independent stone houses on the Lamamã hill, overlooking the valley. Outeiro 1, 75 m² for up to 4 people; Outeiro 2, 150 m² for up to 6. Full kitchen, fast Wi-Fi, a fireplace for autumn and winter, terrace and barbecue.
Check-in is self-service, at any hour: a key box with a code, no reception and no appointment. If you leave Vigo after work on a Friday, the house is waiting for you at eleven at night. Pets welcome (€20).
A whole stone house, river five minutes away, silence and self check-in at any hour. Book direct with 10% off.
Check availability →Money and phone: euro and EU roaming, nothing to change. Road: the Portuguese A3 has electronic tolls on some stretches; the stretch to Paredes de Coura does not. Shopping: supermarket and bakery in town, 8 minutes away; the house has the basics for the first breakfast.
